The Hosting Agreement for the 2024 IWF World Cup, scheduled to take place in Phuket from April 2-11, has been officially signed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Federation. This event holds significant importance as per the IWF Qualification Rules for the 2024 Paris Games, serving as the ultimate competition in the selection pathway for the Olympic festivities in the French capital.

Athletes under the IWF banner also have opportunities to secure their “ticket” to Paris through various additional events. These include the 2022 IWF World Championships held in Bogota last December, the five 2023 continental championships (Pan-American, European, and Asian editions have already occurred, the African showcase is ongoing in Tunis, and the Oceania event is scheduled for November in Honiara, Solomon Islands).

Adding to the list are two 2023 IWF Grand Prix events – the inaugural one in La Havana (CUB) from June 8-18 and the second in Doha (QAT) in the first half of December. The 2024 continental championships, slated before the IWF World Cup in Thailand, also present a viable opportunity for those eyeing Olympic participation in Paris next year.

Antonio Urso, the IWF Secretary General, expressed optimism following productive discussions with the Phuket hosts. He is confident in the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Federation’s commitment to ensuring the highest organizational standards for this mandatory event in the Paris 2024 qualification. Urso declared, “The commitment of the Thai authorities ensures that they will deliver an excellent competition!”
